This was not the first attempt, the northern island of Roanoke to colonize. The first group of about 75 people, led by Sir Richard Grenville landed there before, but back in the absence of a boat on the delivery of Sir Frances Drake visited the island, they took back most of the settlers to England, so that a small force protection to England, says the colony of Virginia. [1585].
In 1587 went to John White, the second group of 117, including women, the island. They were instructed to collect the rest of the people on the left of the first attempt ....
The time of the year somewhere. It was a "rough passage across the Atlantic at this time of year. Another was the arrival of the Spanish Armada against England, whereupon the moneyhad tried to colonize the New World in order for the construction of ships and the setting are derived from more men to fight against Spain, and the seizure of all available boats for the same reason ... It was led John White [involving the attempt], which, without replenishment ship for its small colony of [then 114].
It took 3 years. Blanco, before it finally made it a place on a pirate ship, which have decided, has to stop on the island to get. In 1590, White came to find out who left ...
The word "Croatoan" was found engraved in a position of strength, and "CRO" in a tree ..... Native American tribe who live on another island, not far from Roanoke. White took this message to the that had been placed on the island of Croatoan for a reason ... posnot sent .. supplies, but a storm [when a hurricane off] in a position to investigate this other island.
It is considered by many historians and archaeologists that this tribe, with the Algonquin, used the island at different times, but not stay there all year ..... and, possibly, the settlers were rescued by the Indians, and when she left, the settlers came with them ....
There are some archaeological and anthropological findings that can support. It may be that some Algonquins were later adopted by the European colonists, with blue eyes and brown hair, reported ......
However, this could also be some evidence that the Scandinavian sailors were also in contact with some Algonquin tribes said.
Other'track', why they left figure in the Spanish archives and said that "landed a raiding party" on Roanoke Iceland in 1588, and it was found abandoned May ... Settlers attack [or] the threat that another group of Spanish attack and fled to Croatoan? .... Or maybe pirates sail the east coast of the Caribbean caused to leave soon .. ..?
DNA and mitochondrial DNA may be able to solve some of these questions, at least partly related to the Algonquins, but mystery remains unresolved at this time ....
There are many different theories ....
[Note: A Roanoake, Virginia, at the moment but not on the island, would now be in North Carolina.]
